Why every private AI model needs a front door

Running your own model is the easy part. Knowing who uses it, and keeping things fair, is where teams get stuck.

Lab note · 6 October 2026

Getting a language model running on your own server takes an afternoon. A month later the questions start. Who is using it? Why is it slow at 10am? Which team should pay for the next GPU?

Model servers are built to be fast. They aren't built to know who is calling them. Without something in front, everyone shares one key, nobody can see usage, and one busy script can slow everyone else down.

A front door fixes this. Each team gets its own key and a fair share of capacity, and usage is recorded so you can plan ahead. Because the front door speaks the same language as the model server, existing tools keep working.

Our advice for any team starting with private AI is simple. Put the front door in on day one. It's far easier than adding it after everyone has shared the same key for a year.
